Total daily trips by public transport
This is the total number of trips made daily by public transport in the area served by the bus system. In this context a trip means a complete journey from one point (for example the traveler’s residence) to another (such as his place of work). It may involve several boardings, i.e. traveling on more than one vehicle, or on more than one mode of public transport, such as bus and train.

Most people will make at least two trips in a day.

This figure provides a measure of the total demand for public transport in the city, and by comparing it with the number of trips made by the various modes, enables the market share to be calculated for each. It also enables calculation of the modal split between private and public transport.
