Total daily trips (excluding walk trips)This is the total number of trips made daily by public and private transport in the area served by the bus system. In this context a trip means a complete journey from one point (for example the traveler’s residence) to another (such as his place of work). It may involve several boardings, i.e. traveling on more than one vehicle, or on more than one mode of transport, such as bus and train.
Most people will make at least two trips in a day.
This figure provides a measure of the total demand for transport in the city, and by comparing it with the number of trips made by bus and other modes, enables the market share to be calculated for each.
Walking trips are not normally counted, although in many developing countries, particularly the poorer ones, many people travel long distances on foot because they cannot afford the fares charged for public transport.
