Average Bus Boardings per Trip
This figure gives an indication of the effectiveness of the route system in meeting passengers’ travel requirements.
A highly complex route network which provides links between virtually every origin and destination will give a figure close to 1.0.
A simple system, such as a “hub-and-spoke” principle, system in which all routes meet at a focal point where passengers may interchange between one route and another, will give a figure in the region of 2.0.
The figure may be even higher than this, for example if the route system comprises a large number of very short routes, and passengers must interchange several times during the course of a journey.
A typical figure for most cities is in the region of 1.25 boardings per trip. For a hub-and spoke system, in which the hub is at the city center, which is the destination for the majority of passengers, a typical figure will be in the region of 1.5 per trip.
