Global mobility is evolving at great speed: moving people and goods around the world is now cheaper, faster, and more efficient than ever—and demand will continue growing. Over the past 20 years, PPIAF has joined forces with public authorities to address the challenges brought by the transport sector. Examples of PPIAF’s work in transportation include:
participating in pioneering projects, such as Tibar Bay Port in East Timor
promoting performance-based approaches, like in Lao PDR’s road PPP
extending community-inclusive road maintenance for local road networks in Vietnam
More broadly, PPIAF has significantly contributed to transport-sector institutional reforms across the globe.
In addition, because transport and climate change are deeply linked—23 percent of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions come from the transport sector)—PPIAF also opens the path for innovative solutions for climate mitigation. An example of this nexus is the use of electric vehicles for public transportation in Kolkata.
PPIAF’s work spans all transport sub-sectors (roads, ports, airports, rail, inland waterways, bus rapid transit, ferries, metros, logistics) in all regions. With respect to urban mobility, in particular, PPIAF’s activities range from institutional support to the private participation for bus operations in Greater Maputo and Freetown, the development of transit-oriented development options for metro lines in Lima and Bogota, and the exploration of niche solutions such as cable cars.
Besides, PPIAF’s knowledge products are well-recognized and include toolkits (roads and highways, port reform, urban bus), handbooks (urban rail), and programs such as Leaders in Urban Transport Planning that aim to build capacity among urban transport practitioners.
