NIGERIA: Sustainable Green e-Mobility Solutions
In 2013, the World Bank identified opportunities for Nigeria to pursue low-carbon transportation solutions like renewable energy and electric mobility. It recommended adopting electric buses in public transit to reduce emissions. Nigeria's government subsequently pursued e-mobility strategies and pilots, including private financing. PPIAF then helped analyze e-mobility engagement options, emphasizing the need for financing structures beyond public funding alone. Recommendations include subsidizing e-buses and financing to address high upfront costs, prioritizing renewable energy sources, and deciding private sector involvement upfront while encouraging operator adoption. To implement these recommendations, urban e-mobility trials will begin in Lagos before expanding to Abuja, Ibadan, Kaduna, and Kano. This approach is expected to reduce transport emissions while promoting sustainable, inclusive economic growth in Nigeria. By supporting critical analysis of Nigeria's e-mobility options, the PPIAF activity contributed to the government's pursuit of clean public transit and laid the groundwork for advancing electric mobility through strategic private sector participation.
