MALAWI: Preparation of options for financial recovery for ESCOM

The power sector in Malawi faced numerous challenges, including poor service quality, high transmission and distribution losses, implementation issues with the Energy Management Information System (EMIS), a non-cost-reflective tariff system, sector arrears due to lack of payment discipline, and more. A PPIAF-funded activity supported a comprehensive assessment in collaboration with Malawi's national utility, ESCOM, the Ministry of Energy, and the regulator. This resulted in a detailed report that provided a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the power sector. The report presented over 50 concrete recommendations to address the identified issues. These are expected to lead to significant improvements in Malawi's power sector.
