Global:Private-financing of loss reduction and efficiency improvement of electricity T&D enterprises in developing countries
The objective of this activity is to increase available knowledge on the role of private capital in achieving loss reduction in distribution companies located in developing countries. Attention will be given to relevant business models, the creation of markets for new technology and efficiently channeling private capital in this domain. This study intends to (i) Identify what various companies are doing in terms of relevant technologies, products, services and business models (ii) Identify examples of loss reduction efforts and undertake analysis of successes/failures (iii) Assess electricity market environment in low and middle-income country utilities with the goal of identifying the demand for loss reduction services and map the technology and business process innovation to the type of market conditions that could take advantage of them (iv) Identify ways to maximize finance for development such that private financing can flow to public SOEs (MFD) for loss reduction activities (v) identify pilot projects for the IFC to co-finance to build organizational experience and encourage market creation in loss reduction.
