GLOBAL:From Waste to Resource: Why and How Should we Plan and Invest in Wastewater?

This knowledge product promotes the prioritization and design of investments in the context of a circular economy in which waste water is considered as an asset and a resource to be utilized rather than a liability. The activity produced guidance on improved strategies for the financing of wastewater treatment, including financial structures that incentivize resource recovery to promote the sustainability of the infrastructure. The main recommendations of this report and case studies analyzed are: 1. Develop wastewater initiatives as part of a basin planning framework to maximize benefits, improve efficiency and resource allocation, and engage stakeholders. 2. Build the utility of the future by shifting away from wastewater treatment plants to water resource recovery facilities, thereby realizing wastewater’s value. 3. Explore and support the development of innovative financing and sustainable business models in the sector 4. Implement the necessary policy, institutional, and regulatory frameworks to promote the paradigm shift.
