AFRICA: Solar Energy Planning for the Alliance for the Sahel

In June 2018, PPIAF approved a grant to support the development of a spatial solar energy planning strategy for three-member countries of the Sahel Alliance (Chad, Mali, and Niger), an assessment of the private sector interest in off-grid and on-grid renewable opportunities, and capacity development of government officials in PPAs negotiations and IPPs implementation oversight. The technical assistance financed tailored training sessions in Niger and Mali to support PPA negotiations for solar PV IPP development. A solar mapping for on-grid and off-grid solar PV development in Chad and an initial assessment of solar on-grid and off-grid opportunities for private sector participation, including enabling environment, in Chad, Mali, and Niger were also completed. A summary presentation was delivered by the consultants to the members of the Sahel Alliance “Energy Group” in April 2020.
